چکیده
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology is promising for wastewater treatment because it enables recovery of clean electric energy as wastewater organic matter is oxidized. The preferred oxidant is the oxygen in air because it is cheap and readily available, but the efficiency of oxygen reduction is constrained by operating conditions (low oxygen solubility, temperature and mostly neutral pH). Consequently, cathode performance often limits MFC power

Three-dimensional carbon nanotube-textile anode for high-performance microbial fuel cells.
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) harness the metabolism of microorganisms, converting chemical energy into electrical energy. Anode performance is an important factor limiting the power density of MFCs for practical application. Improving the anode design is thus important for enhancing the MFC performance, but only a little development has been reported. Here, we describe a biocompatible, highly co...
متن کاملPower generation by packed-bed air-cathode microbial fuel cells.
Catalysts and catalyst binders are significant portions of the cost of microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathodes. Many materials have been tested as aqueous cathodes, but air-cathodes are needed to avoid energy demands for water aeration. Packed-bed air-cathodes were constructed without expensive binders or diffusion layers using four inexpensive carbon-based materials. Cathodes made from activated ca...
متن کاملOxygen-reducing biocathodes operating with passive oxygen transfer in microbial fuel cells.
Oxygen-reducing biocathodes previously developed for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have required energy-intensive aeration of the catholyte. To avoid the need for aeration, the ability of biocathodes to function with passive oxygen transfer was examined here using air cathode MFCs. Two-chamber, air cathode MFCs with biocathodes produced a maximum power density of 554 ± 0 mW/m(2), which was compar...

a r t i c l e i n f o High-performance microbial fuel cell (MFC) air cathodes were constructed using a combination of inexpensive materials for the oxygen reduction cathode catalyst and the electrode separator. A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based electrode separator enabled high coulombic efficiencies (CEs) in MFCs with activated carbon (AC) cathodes without significantly decreasing power output....
متن کاملRegeneration of the power performance of cathodes affected by biofouling
Air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used in a cascade-system, to treat neat human urine as the fuel. Their long-term operation caused biodeterioration and biofouling of the cathodes. The cathodes were made from two graphite-painted layers, separated by a current collector. The initial performance of the MFCs was reaching average values of 105.5 ± 32.2 μW and current of 1164.5 ± 120.2 μ...
